  1. In addition to onward's response

memory and data bus widths have increased.

Modern processor chips have many more devices on the chip, in addition to the CPU, bus drivers, registers etc. Some even have video processors on the chip.

They run much hotter and are more prone to electrical and magnetic interference.

I remember the 6502 and Z80, coding in assember or machine code. 1 K of video ram was a luxury, 256 bytes was enough for a stack and 2K of NV memory was enough for many programs.

  2. Depends how early you mean 8008 or even 4004.  Essentially the main differences are:

    1. Speed - clock rate

    2. Density of transistors/size of circuits

    3. The number of instructions

    4. The size of the microcode

    5. The number of logical units on a chip

Most of these are just simply a result of continously improving wafering technology that allows more and more circuits to be etched onto the piece of silicon.  With this you could build more complex processors.

  3. number of transistors in a single chip.
