  1. Well, if your playing at school or having private lessons, your teacher may have a prefrence. However, I started out with Muller-Rusch. There are many differrent types and levels of these books, so you may want to let the sales person now what level you are working at.

  2. the suzuki method books are very good for beginners.

you should also pick up a scale book and an etude book.

i play the violin, but i've seen lots of viola-transposed violin books.

i recommend Carl Flesch (violin scales, maybe for viola. scales are all the same)

and Kayser (violin etudes, there should be viola-transposed ones)

    good luck!

  3. Besides finding a good private teacher, I'd start with:

Tune a Day, Book 1 for Viola

You could also start working on the Suzuki books for viola:

For other viola etude books, please see:

If you're more advanced, you may want to get the Wohlfahrt:

In terms of scale books, I disagree with the above poster about getting the Carl Flesch;  a new viola student should start with the Mogill, which is the viola version of the Hrimaly (beginning violin scale book):

Advanced Scales and Double Stops - Mogill

The Carl Flesch is more university level, and not suitable for beginning students.
