Why, during conscious sedation for a colonoscopy do they?

put a sponge plug into one nostril. No gas was used, it was an intravienious method?

  1. It's to keep an opening in case you start having a respiratory collapse, that pathway is open.


  2. I've never heard of a plug. That's weird. There are nasal airays to help keep the air passages open that go in your nose, but those are flexible tubes, and are not used in conscious sedation. They are used for deep sedation. (Conscious sedation = conscious = awake)

    Many so-called conscious sedations are actually IV general anesthetics. (That's what I do for colonoscopies, but on purpose)

  3. the sponge is a device to deliver oxygen. It is a little bit of sponge that surrounds a plastic tube so as to make it more comfortable and to help it stay lodged in the nose. The other end is attached to the wall mounted oxygen so you can be given supplemental oxygen during g the procedure.
