Why 0.5ml of urine sample is added to 5ml BENEDICT's reagent?

is there any reason why 5ml of benedict's regent and 0.5ml urine are mixed?

what if more or less of either solution was taken?

  1. this is to find out  whether you have sugar(reducing) in your urine. a brick red precipitaton is a positive sign. patients who have sugar in their urine are said to be hyperglycaemic.this could result from a kidney problem and needs to be attended to.


  2. Benedict's reagent is a qualitative test for reducing sugars in the urine, but it is also semi-quantitative, by which is meant that it can roughly indicate by the degree of color change, whether the amount of sugar is small, moderate or large.

    Thus the standard amount of urine. If you put in too much urine, even a small amount of glucose could turn the solution bright orange.
