  1. Composite=dividable by self, one, and something else

Prime=dividable by self and one only

1 can only be divided by ONE number, and that is itself.

Like two is a prime number.

  2. See this internet link.

  3. The answer is:

If 1 were prime the law of unique factorization would no longer hold.

Recall that the law of unique factorization says that every positive integer can be written as a product of primes and that this product is unique except for the order of the actors.

If 1 were prime we could take as many 1's as we want to the end of this product and it would no longer be unique.

    Example: 12 = 2²*3.

    If 1 were prime, we could write 12 = 2² * 3 = 2²*3*1 = 2²*3*1*1, etc.
