Why's so much money being spent on the war when many U.S. schools are in bad shape?

just wondering the high school i go to is great because its rich and full of smart kids, and test scores are high. but urban schools need funding.

EDIT: i did not say that i don't support our troops and everything they do for us. i have a brother in the marines, so thats definently not the case. However, i do think that we should also pay more attention to our school system and raising good leaders for our future. sorry for the confusion...

I still don't like our president though, no matter what anyone says, but that is my OPINION. other people do like him, and thats fine.

i agree some "urban" schools need funding...but i believe the bigger problem is the parents. they are not taking responsibility for their children whether it be for their education or their at home activities and responsibilities. They let their kids roam the streets at all hours of the day and night. They should be "PARENTING" their children and helping them.

The President's job is to protect or freedom.  Terrorist attacked the World Trade Center and in order for things like this not to happen anymore and for students to actually even be able attend school money must be spent to keep us safe on war.

Republicans feel that an able individual will somehow be able to educate himself and rise above it all no matter the limitations. Money spent on enforcing the corporate will overseas is seen by them as a more worthwhile goal. I have never understood this to the extent that it is now being implemented. It is widely assumed by an ignorant electorate that Republican ideals somehow trump all others- its' the fat, rich kid who wants to be fed first and well beyond his capacity/need to satiate himself.

Well since the federal government does not build schools or pay for the upkeep of schools.

The question makes no sense.

The local counties pay for building schools and their upkeep.

Not even the States pay for building schools.

I am not going to get into the whole political thing..but I will tell you as long as there is a war, I want soldiers to have anything they need. From the wife of a sgt. who is doing his 2nd tour, keeping him safe is fine with me. I know we need money for schools, but please can we wait till all the soldiers are home safe and sound before we take money from kevlar vests to buy computers.

You should ask this question when you are #1 old enough to appreciate the ignorance with which it was asked during this time period in our country's history and #2 after you have a loved one who is deployed and his very expensive MRAP keeps him alive after he has been hit by numerous IED's and roadside bombs.  It's amazing how experience makes you smarter and clarifies things.

Well, to put it simply - live kids learn better then dead kids. (at least most)

Sure we could put every bit of the defense budget into education and then wonder why we are all speaking Arabic or Russin or german or...well, you get the picture.

Freedom is not free, with out our military we might not have the freedom to GO TO school, Speak American, Marry who we want, Pick what we drive where we live. SO with out Our Hard WON (By OUR Military) Freedom we might not have anything to learn.

Mitch, the urban schools are being funded equally as well.  You run amok when you consider that the administrators are given a budget at the beginning of the school year and then you have to contend with kids who have no respect for property or authority.  Vandalism costs everyone.  Then add to it teacher's unions demanding higher pay, text books that get torn up and lost.

Asking why we fund one thing over another when one has nothing to do with the other is a matter of comparing apples to oranges.  Why do we fund prisons when we could be/should be funding schools?

you cant lay the blame of the schools in your town or state on the federal government...each state is responsible for their schools...most states that have a lottery ..have an education lottery if the state isn't using the money on the schools in that state...its the people in that state that are ignorant...because they didn't make them do this in order to get a lottery in..take a look at the schools in georgia...they put education first...they have hope grants and scholarships to their high school students..for any state school paid for courtesy of their state lottery....
