  1. You need a hole in the wall.

Above the window is a lintel, a concrete bar or steel girder, designed to take the weight of the brickwork above. If you made a new hole anywhere else, you'd need to consider inserting another one.

  2. Any air conditioning device should be installed near a wall on the side of the house opposite the dominant summer sun.

Remember that the cooling unit is attempting to cool the air that moves through it.  The hotter the air going in is or the hotter the body (case) of the air conditioner is the less effective it is.

It's always best to have the unit in the shade and near the ground (heat rises)

  3. Air conditioners are sometimes installed below the window because it is usually the most convenient spot. The area directly in front will not have furniture blocking the path of the air flow. Or because people do not want it in the window blocking the light. They may also want the ability to open the window on days when the A/C is not needed. It is not the best spot to put it. Cool air drops so the A/C should actually be placed as high up on the wall as possible towards the center of the room to give you the most even air flow.
