Question:

Why Am I Told To Feed My Son Plain Yogurt Instead Of Fruit Or Vanilla Flavored?

At 8 months, my nurse told me I could start feeding my son yogurt but only plain yogurt. He absolutely hates it and i've given him tastes of my vanilla/fruit yogurt and he loves it. Why couldn't I give him vanilla or yogurt with real fruit in it?

I've tried mixing baby fruit into the plain yogurt but he still doesn't like it! He always figures out when i'm trying to trick him lol.

  1. I give my daughter Minigo yogurt in a variety of flavors and I've never had a problem. I think the nurse is wrong. Go ahead and give him flavored yogurt, my daughter's been eating it since she was 7 months old.

They do sell YoBaby at some Walmart SuperCenters in Canada and at Dominion. Minigo Immuni+ is also a good brand and despite the "thumbs down" has been great for my daughter. YoBaby has added sugar. A little sugar is fine. Like anything else, moderation is the key.

  2. I'm assuming the nurse just meant no commercial flavored yogurts. Those have sugar in them, and it's best to avoid sugar at this early age.

But sure, if you want to mix fresh fruit or unsweetened canned/jarred fruit with yogurt, I can't imagine there would be any issues with it.

Of course some babies don't like yogurt anyway -- so if he doesn't care for it, he doesn't need it. Try offering again in a couple of months.

  3. The concern with flavoured yogurt is the sugar, or worse the sweetener.  Also many yogurts contain honey and of course that should be avoided.

YoBaby is a CANADIAN product that is sold around the world.

YoBaby however has added sugars; 13g of sugar per container is rather a lot.

  4. It's because all yogurt with added fruit have lots of sugar in it.  Also, babies need the full fat yogurt and yours is probably fat free or very low fat.

Have you tried the yo-baby yogurt?  It comes with fruit and no sugar added.  My baby loves it... I also give her a l**k of my yogurt and she enjoys it too...

Actually, I'm in Whitby.. the sell YoBaby at Sobeys, A&P, Walmart.. .just check the organic section first.. then check the 'regular' section

  5. There are yogurts available that are made just for infants in flavors that they will enjoy. My grandson has been eating yogurt since he was an infant. I don't know why she would think a baby would eat plain yogurt. It is like eating cardboard.

Added Monday: There are also several yogurts available for kids that are lower in sugar. Walmarts in the U.S. have them, so maybe they are available in Canada too. Check in the pudding and yogurt section. My grandson eats those now. We don't give him excessive sugar and he's lean with a solid frame. I definitely don't believe in giving kids junk food but I don't think most babies will eat plain yogurt. Yuck!

  6. I've been giving our daughter the Yo Baby Yogurt.  It has fruit and cereal in it and since I started, she won't eat anything else for breakfast. I have tried plain yogurt and put in fresh mashed fruit to give it some flavor.  You could try fresh fruit in the yogurt rather than baby food fruit.  Again, we give ours the Yo Baby Yogurt and she is fine with it.  I started giving this to her when she was about 8 months old - a little at a time and she is  hooked.

  7. Egg McMuffins, McGriddles, Tim Hortons Breakfast Sandwiches, Honey Nut Cheerios...just to name a few.

    LOL.

Seriously I give lots of fruit and toast and regular yogurt. My doc told me the whole "YoBaby" thing is a marketing scam. Look at the labels. They have sugar and all the c**p that normal yogurt has. Best bet is to buy whole organic yogurt unsweetened and add some organic applesauce. That's the best you'll do as far as giving yogurt. Don't buy into the whole "it's made for babies it must be good" thing. Simply not true.

Also same goes for Gerber "Puffs" and all the other junk made for babies. That c**p isn't healthy! Stick with fruit and avoid foods that will just end up creating eating habits that will turn your baby into an obese child. Be thankful Canada doesn't have the junk that the USA has for babies. Remember the USA also has the highest obesity ratio in the world. Why? Because we get our kids addicted to eating c**p right from the cradle and then wonder why they want to eat nothing but junk when they get older. Hence the Mc.Kid generation.

  8. I would imagine it's because vanilla/fruit yoghurt has added sugar whereas plain yoghurt does not.

  9. Flavored yogurts from the store have added sugars, even the YoBaby ones.  NOT good for a baby!

I added spices to my daughter's yogurt, along with fruits or veggies I chopped.  Favorites are still: banana with cinnamon and nutmeg, avocado and black pepper, potato with dill, and pumpkin with cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla.  :)

Here's a link on spices.  He's old enough now!

**Michelle, the YoBaby yogurts (except the plain ones) DO add sugar!!  It's just a bit less than "adult" yogurts.

  10. I feed my son the Yo baby organic yogurt. (he's 7 months)  I buy him the plain yogurt (no cereal or fruit in it) and it comes in vanilla and banana flavors. I plan on buying the kind with the fruit and stuff in it now that he has 2 teeth. I was worried about him choking on the fruit.
