they had a big breakthrough in the early 1930ths with hybrid corn and other crops, leading to the corn belts. This knowledge came only gently to europe and asia, but rice research is (of course) most intensively under investigation in Asia /China.  You also have to take in account the climate and the area you need for planting.

But sure, to control the prizes too much is not a fair thing!

All minds will always share. All nations feel the influences of all other nations, in all aspects of life. Country's that have the most influence on others seem to do so because in achievement or learning a country or individual can go from point A to point D and skip the expense or time of B and C, which is a huge value to those who can not incur the expense. In culture or art or intellectual works, those who produce share, and capitalistic societies push that as a requirement. Any country with any wealth has a larger allotment of time for the "arts" and in a basic way, humans share ideas with humans. America is also the recipient of a HUGE amount of influence from every culture under the sun. Sociology? That is immensely complex and that is what it is all about.
