Why Andres Villas Boas will be the next Chelsea manager
Despite Guus Hiddink emerging as the favourite to be linked with the manager’s post at Chelsea after Carlo Ancelotti was sacked at the end of last season, in a turn of events, the Blues are reportedly close to acquiring Andres Villas Boas as their manager.
Hiddink is currently contracted with the Turkish national side, a contract t he was not quite willing to end just yet. He had a release clause of £4 million, which the London club would have had no problem paying if the Turkish FA had not threatened to take
action against them.
After almost a month of chasing Hiddink, it emerged today that Chelsea were close to signing Villas Boas as their new manager. The 33-year-old Portuguese manager has a release clause of 15 million, making him one of the most expensive managers.
While the manager himself has not made any comments on the recent developments, his current side FC Porto have come out to claim that no contact have been made by the Blues.
That conflicts other reports which suggest that an agreement has already been reached between FC Porto and Chelsea over Andres Villas Boas, with the Portuguese giants just waiting for the £15 million to be deposited in their http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Bank-c38601 account.
Villas Boas, who is considered to be the next Jose Mourinho due to his resemblance to the Special One, has not lost a single match while in charge of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186. He led them to a historic Europa League win last season, making him one of the most successful
manager’s they have had.
After Mourinho, of course.
This could very well be the reason why Villas Boas has agreed to take the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 at Stamford Bridge. The constant comparisons with Mourinho could get very frustrating; the young manager might be on his way to achieve something Mourinho was unable to with the
London side.
While at Chelsea, Mourinho managed to win every single trophy there was to win, except for one; the coveted UEFA Champions League. During his time at Stamford Bridge, from 2004 to 2007, Mourinho could not lead his side to the European Cup.
He managed back to back English Premier League titles, FA Cup, Carling Cup and Community Shield trophies, but the Champions League always remained a far away dream. Since then, there have been many managers at the club, none of them being able to claim the
European trophy.
In fact, it was exactly for this reason that Carlo Ancelotti was shown the door at the end of last season. While the Italian manager made history with the club, leading them to their first ever double in his first season at the club, he was unable to deliver
any silverware, more importantly the Champions League, in his second season at the club.
With him gone, the Blues owner Roman Abramovich is looking for a replacement who can deliver the Champions League. Desperate times call for desperate measures, which is why the Russian billionaire has decided to appoint Andres Villas Boas as the next http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786
manager.
Not to take anything away from the brilliant tactician, but he is younger than most of the manager’s around. That is not a bad thing in itself, only it puts him behind the others in the experience department.
Having led Porto to the Europa League, could Boas lead Chelsea to the Champions League? If not, then would he be able to help the Blues reclaim the English Premier League and repeat Ancelotti’s double.
The main reason for Villas Boas’ appointment, which is yet to be confirmed, seems to be the Champions League. The Portuguese manager is desperate to prove himself to fans and break out of the constant comparison with Mourinho, once and for all.
