Why Are Brits So Self-Conscious ?

So many questions about embarrass this embarrass that. Embarrassed about supposedly crappy closing ceremony contribution and London Mayor's apparently uncouth behavior. Worried about how they will look as hosts. Why so self-loathing and SO concerned about how you all come across?

Because after Bejing the eyes of the world are now upon us.

If we don't finish in at least the same place on the medal table now it will be considered a failure and the media will rip our athletes to shreds.

If we are crummy hosts then the worlds media will rip us to shreds.

And unlike Americans we actually value foreign relations.

Because we once ruled the world and were so embarassed by our superiority over other countries that we developed a self deprecating attitude and national character and that has stuck to this day. Never mind the thumbs down- that's the reason. If you don't like it or if the concept is a bit too complex and sophisticated to get your brain around too bad.

Because hosting an olympics is like hosting a wedding party. You don't want to host a bad party especially after your friend has just hosted an amazing one.
