Where does the 'stately' part of it come from? How did these grand houses come to receive their name?

  1. Maybe from the word "estate" which can often mean a large and expensive house.

  2. Stately- means regal or grand.

  3. Jolly good question, could it be that the lordy owners were known to get into a 'state' by drinking too much port?

  4. Cause they are manses or mansions, and I'm guessing stately comes from estate, which means grounds and fountains and acres, ponds, gardens etc. which is more expansive than an apartment wouldnt you say.
