  1. my hubbies american living here as a permanent resident. he never wants an aussie citizenship and is happy to stay a australian resident. the only reasons for citizeship i feel are mainly a sense of belonging to the persons new country. some ppl also feel obliged to get citizenship as they feel australia has helped them out and now they would be proud to called themselves aussies.

apart from that there are the legal reasons which others have already mentioned; you can get govenment jobs, you can vote, you can leave the country for ages and come back with out a worry (my hubbie can only leave for up to 18 months then must return or loose residency).

the decision is completely up to you and do not let others push you in to anything. my hubbie is american and proud of it so he will not give up that citizenship for an aussie one which he doesn't believe is who he is. although he stays coz of me and he loves it here :)

  2. The main advantages would be the ability to vote, and thus have some say in the political process of the country, and have access to some welfare benefits.

Also, in the government's eyes, you would be considered no different to a native born Australian citizen, you would have permenant right to abode in Australia and also the Australia government would be able to give you better assistance if you ever run into problems abroad.

You would also be able to leave Australia for an extented period of time, prehaps to have an extented stay with family overseas and run no risk of having a visa being revoked due to staying away for to long, you're right to live in Australia is permenant.

Also, as a citizen, you are entitled to some government jobs that otherwise wouldn't be available to a non-citizen.

  3. As above but also one run in with the law and you run the risk of deportation. Have read about children migrating to Australia as new born babies but never becoming citizens. They grow up break the law and get sent back to their country of birth even if they do not even the know the language.

I had a relative that came to Australin when aged about 8. As a 20 year old he went to Europe for a working holiday and stayed longer than he planned. Jumped on the plane back to Australia and was denied entry and sent back to England where he had to apply for immigration all over again.

  4. when you leave the country you wont need a re-entry visa, to get back in, that's about it, mate
