I just came back from a 18 series BOSE home theater demo. I found the effects are almost same like any other high end home theater systems from other vendors. But why they jacked up the price which is not affordable to common man?

Let me know is there any extra advantage/features of having BOSE home home theater at such a higher price.

  1. You are paying for the name.  I agree with the other guy up here, the Klipsch systems are way better and alot more affordable.  Check out Best Buy for Klipsch, they always have package deals with Klipsch, less than 1k for the whole system to include the subwoofer too.

  2. Bose have built their name on fashion statements (hence the name of one of their series 'Lifestyle'), and charge accordingly.

In reallity, their performance against others in the price group falls short, far better is available for far less.

Having said that, if you like it, buy it, but be aware that you can do better for less outlay.

Read the attached links from a very respected publication, you will see what I mean.

  3. i agree with you...i think when buying a bose system you are just paying for the name...to me they are not any different from another home theater...the idea of buying a pair of noise canceling headphones from bose and pay almost $200 bucks is very stupid...now...it maybe some people that love bose......i don't ...in my case i love SONY ....is affordable, the designs are cool and the quality of the product is super.....i never had a complaint about them...so i guess i'll stick to them......but bose ain't for me.....:p

  4. Bose requires all stores to sell their products for the same price and they keep the price high to enforce that they are a "Premium brand".

    (Plastic cubes - 1 over-sized tweeter - el-cheepo).

"...I found the effects are almost same like any other high end home theater systems "

    Bose does this:

    - They bring in a rack of Krell amps, parametric equalizers, etc and adjust things for the traveling demo.  You are listening to about $3,000 worth of equipment BESIDES the speakers.

A guy on another fourm told the story about attending one of these demos.  Later one of the screen panels around the demo was ajar and he looked in to discover the audio equipment in a travel case.  He was then caught and escorted from the store.

The only advantage to Bose is the small size of the cube speakers which appeals to women.  But "Anthonly Gallo" makes softball sized speakers which are about the same size and often appear on "Editors Choice" lists by the review magazines.

You wont find Bose on any "Best of" list because Bose sues any magazine that tries to publish a review.  Why would they do this unless they have something to hide?

  5. When you buy Bose you are esentially paying for the name and the size. Bose prides itslef on producting the smallest, clearest speakers. The people they cater to are those that want the name, want the small size, but still want serious sound. Instead of a large wall mounted bar speaker, recessed orbital speaker, or floor or stand mounted speakers, most of the Bose speakers that are sold are small wall mounted speakers with the same sound quality as considerably large speakers. Essentially youre paying for brand and size without a reduction in quality.

  6. One of the main reasons for high prices is that Bose spends over 40% of revenue on advertising ... mainly to people who don't know much about HT. They aim at the affluent and overprice their equipment (since everyone "knows" that expensive stuff must be good ... right?).  They emphasize looks and small size -- but use poor components, proprietary interconnects, limited expansion capability and misleading demos that emphasize bass and treble .. but mask poor midrange with specially equalized program material.

You will never see an authoritative HT review that rates Bose more than mediocre.

You can do much better than Bose with any number of other manufacturers' products ... and for less money. As an example, see links for reviews of Anthony Gallo's A'Diva, Mirage Nanosat, and Klipsch RSX-5 .... all of which beat the pants off a Bose system.
