Why do some organizations seem to have a new CEO every year or two, whereas others have top leaders who stay with the company for many years? What factors about the manager or about the company might account for this difference?

  1. Lots of factors are at play. For one, the expectations set by the Board and shareholders may simply be unrealistic. Another could be that the rewards offered the CEOs are not sufficient to retain high performers who have alternatives elsewhere. Another could be that the Board is incredibly difficult to work with and it's not worth the effort (example: retired founders often sit on Boards and continue to try to run the company).
