I just graduated high school and am currently 17. For the past week I have spent all my energy looking for a job. As of the moment I have applied to:

Blockbuster - 5 locations

Hollywood Video - 2 Locations

Costco

Circuit City

Movie Theater = 2 Locations

Best Buy

Target

Barnes and Nobles

Borders

Jamba Juice - 2 Locations

Office Max - 2 Locations

SAM's club

Apple Store

Cold Stone

Big Lots

Subway - 2 Locatoins

Quiznos

However, It's been a week and I haven't recieved even one call back! I had even followed up on my applications on monday of this week by going to each individual store and giving them my resume. I have had some work experience, and at school was one of the top students in my class.

I just don't understand why no one is calling me back.

  1. You are young, which may hold you back until you are 18.  You are also competing with all the students who are working this summer but who will return to school in the fall (college and HS).

Are you going to the stores dressed up like someone in the business rather than like a teen on summer vacation?

Are you looking for a specific job or saying to them you'll do anything?  They don't want someone who'll take anything.  Are you checking to see if there are actually any jobs open?

It may take months and many more applications to find a job.  In the past, I sought work through employment agencies, but that was with secretarial skills.

How about looking in the newspaper for job openings?  You may also need to get more training in some field before you become attractive as a long-term employee.  If you are going on to college, there might not be anything open right now for temporary work.

Do what another answerer said:  Take anything, lawn work, etc. to earn some money and get some experience.  Also, ask anyone you know who works about openings in their companies.  Many people get jobs because of word of mouth.

Good luck.  All that education and smartness will do you well.

  2. Everytime you apply for a job, you are competing with ten or twenty other people trying to get the same job. As much as there are of places that you tried to get a job at, there must have been someone else that proved to be more suitable for their work based on their appearance, body language, experience, and skills. However, applying for a job is all about being patient. Sometimes it takes a long time for corporation people to schedual an interview for someone if they have a lot they need to do at the present time. All I can say is keep waiting.

  3. KEEP trying

do the same for 5 weeks and I guarantee you will have a job

  4. You need to start working for yourself. Run an ad in the paper for any kind of yard work, mowing lawns, trimming hedges etc.

cleaning garages. Do good work at a fair labor rate, and your business will grow, mostly from referrals. You'll make more money than you could have at any of the jobs that you've applied for. Be friendly and smile.

Take an evening course in salesmanship. You'll be making big bucks and never need to look back.
