Why Caroline Wozniacki was able to hold on to that number one spot for over a year? - Tennis Special
Caroline Wozniacki doesn’t own the qualities of being a number one player in the world. The reason that she was able to sustain that rank for over a year was that most of the big guns were having rest, injured or out of form.
Maria Sharapova made her comeback in the Australian Open 2012 having missed the bulk of the last season due to niggling shoulder and wrist injuries. She is the biggest threat to all the number one players, considering her terrific
ability to power down the big competitor on her day. She might not be good at registering comebacks but she is definitely stunning at creating an impact.
Another missing player from the tennis category was the former world number one, Serena Williams. She didn’t take part in the tournaments after her last appearance in the US Open, last year. She didn’t disclose her medical issues
but stated that she is unfit to play and will return to the tennis circuit as soon as she recovers. She also made a return in the Australian Open this year. Her sister, Venus Williams, was also missing due to her chronic disease of Sjogren’s syndrome. She
registered her comeback in the doubles matchup of Federation Cup tie.
Belgian tennis ace, Kim Clijsters, was also sidelined due to her injury issues for the major part of the last year. She also returned to the tennis circuit in January to defend her Australian Open title which she failed to do so.
It is incredible to see a lot of big names coming back to the tennis professional platform in the Australian Open that made it almost impossible for the Dane number one to win her maiden Grand Slam tournament.
Wozniacki made her debut in 2005 and has won 18 singles title since then. However, the true test of world class players is in major championships and she has never been able to clinch the major title in her career. One of the biggest
checks on player’s game style is her ability to beat all kinds of players and only the Grand Slam tournament provides you the platform to fulfil that goal.
Wozniacki was criticized for her position at the top but she absorbed all pressure and continued to play her natural game. However, she has always been unable to live up to the expectations of the people in big matches. Earlier
in the week, she stooped to the American number one, Serena Williams, in three-sets. Surprisingly, she won the first set 6-1 but failed to continue in same fashion. This has always been the case with her. She starts of really well but faces a major slump in
her play during the contest.
Now that Williams and Sharapova are back forever, she has no chance of climbing up in the ranking. The only way she can go is downwards. Firstly, Victoria Azarenka, snatched her number one spot, then she dropped out of Top-5 and
now she is on her way to move out of the Top-10 players. Probably, the time will come when everyone will forget that she was even a number one player ever.
