  1. Communism is based on the idea that the government would fade away and the people will rule their own affairs through democracy, it just never works out that way because human nature is to try to control others and profit for yourself and your kin.  Communism is a great system of government and it really works.  For ants and bees, not humans.

So the answer is that they intended a democratic communist nation, but they never got around to relinquishing power to the people.

  2. kim jong ill is chairman of the national defense commity. It is a job, and a defacto most popular hero in north korea. the senate and other government public offices are elected by the people. Democracy means that the people vote on everything. Should we build a new bridge in rome, lets vote. More tax less tax, lets vote. No country has run a strict democracy in 2000 years. Greece is the one and only i know of, oh and pirates are strict democracies. Today the powers that be manipulated the stupid and call any thing they want something nice so you'll buy it. So the whole democracy thing is a ploy by all governments. With the grain of truth they they do have some sort of vote about something every once in a while. Republic means that the people choose a person or group of persons to make thier decisions for you. This is a closer to what the US system is. Where it is rare you vote directly on prop 22, but instead choose an elite group to make the decisions be them senate or a singular decider or overlord. They are democratic and a republic, perhaps less than the US is but you are far from sparkly clean.

Another suggestion is that the nicer sounding name a country has the scarier it really is. So you have United States, united thats nice. Then there is the peoples republic of congo; aww they're peoples and republic how nice. Just watch out walking around the congo and chicago for that matter. Now we ratchet it up to democratic peoples republic of north korea, wow watch out, you'll get water tortured. So if you find a land far away called shiny happy peoples love land; you better run for your life! Now think of the opposite, bermuda, france, there is no reason to be afraid of these places.

  3. Because ours is called United States of America, which has never been united for 200+ years. If one does not agree, just ask oneself is out government, congress, senate, .... ever united?

  4. To answer the question accurately, a person must look at the history around the reason for "North" and "South" Korea.

Korea was a colony of Japan from 1905 until the end of WW-2 when, under the aggreements signed at Yalta, Postdam and Cairo between Britain, the USA, Russia and China, Korea was TEMPORARILY divided at the 37th parallel with Russia occupying the North and the US occupying the South.

Elections were supposed to have been held in both zones by mid 1948 for reunification. The US refused to allow any elections and persecuted any dissidents calling for national election. The US also created, in violation of the three agreements and the UN charter, the Republic of South Korea and installed the right-wing dictator Syngman Rhee.

The Russian zone declared itself the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" [note ** there is no "north" in the name) some three months later and held democratic elections (as supervised by, and vetted by, the UN).

  5. Technically, North Korea has elections. They just don't have free elections, because you are being watched by someone, and you don't have a choice of candidates, but more like a "YES" or "NO" to Kim Jong Il. Democracy simply means having elections in the eyes of the UN. It doesn't necessarily mean having freedom.

  6. because the late korean despot kim wanted to mislead the world into believing that north korea is a country of the people, by the people, and for the people which it is not and never has been.
