Well,  for 5 nights in a hotel, it would run you about $600.  For food each day, $25 to $40 for a total of $125 to $200.  Rental car would be $300 plus gas.  Assuming you only had $1000 in cash and no credit cards, Canada would assume you are trying to stay in the country illegally with such insufficient funds.

Canada a fascist state?  Oh...let's see.  We don't have GITMO.  The only time I had mirrors under my car was entering East Germany during the Cold War and the US post 9/11.

Maybe they wanted to make sure you had enough gas money to get home.

Most likely there were other reasons.  When you cross the border they ask you many more questions than just how much money you have.
