Why Did Georgia Invade South Ossettia?

I never heard of South Osettia before last week. Now its front page news. CNN and MSNBC are is good at reporting the violence, but they don'tt tell us why they're fighting in the first place. Can anyone tell me why their fighting and why Georgia invaded South Osetia in the first place?

It's not an invassion, when Ossetia actually belongs to Georgia.  

The reason is that Some Ossetians want to become an independent nation or to be annexed by Russia.   Georgia wants to reaffrim control of the area.   Russia claims to be going in there to bring peace, but they might want to take over the area as well.

Georgia went in to South Ossettia to stop rebels from breaking off and forming their own country(or to join Russia.) Russia supported the rebellion, because it was possible for them to get the new breakaway area. Russia fought Georgia over whether to stop or help the rebels.

South Ossetia along with Abkhazia are territories inside  Georgia.  Both declaring independence from Georgia, they have been acting as such since the early 1990s but they were not recognized by United Nations.

Claiming South Ossetian separatists had shelled Georgian villages in violation of  a ceasefire, Georgia  launched a military offensive  on 7 Aug (2008) aimed to control Tskhinvali, the capital city of South Ossetia. Several residents including few Russians peacekeepers got killed in the process.    Russia easily came into defense accusing Georgian President of genocide.

On August 8, 2008, Russia whose troops were already combat-ready  at the Russia-South Ossetia border (according to Georgia's President) ,  had easily entered  South Ossetia to confront Georgia’s military force who apparently no match to invading Russians, eventually retreated after about five days of fierce fighting and accuse Russia for agression.

Russian forces captured the regional capital Tskhinvali destroying some of Georgia's capability for airstrikes.  On Geogia's aggression claim,  the Russian govt said that it was Georgia that started the war by conducting a military operation against South Ossetia.

Of course, there are some twists to this story,  but this is what i understood so far. It seemed the Russians have foreseen this things to happen considering their troop build up on the Russian-South Ossetia's border. I also wonder on claim that separatists had shelled villages that prompted Georgia to launch the attack.

south osetia is said to be russian but there are georgians living there and they were being shooted for 4 days, and at last the georgian president ordered to enter the city tskhinvali (where all this was going on ) and protect georgians and that was all russians needed to start bombing the whole goergia saying  it was their duty to protect russians (i dunno what they are protecting in tbilisi the capital, gori, etc, etc. ) now they are still robbing, burning the houses down, shooting people, and they have still bombed the country since the order of medvedev to stop shooting

Two nations had the difficult history. Ossetians always did not want to be the part of the Georgia.

Georgia say that it is "their land" and they will retake it at all cost.

They tried to do it in 1991 but failed. Georgia lost and it ended with peace treaty in 1992 with Russia as the mediator and the peacekeeper.

In 1992 99% of the ossetians voted to be independent.

Some years ago with US support georgian army started to buy a lot of weapons, US also trained georgian army. Its military budget reached 1 billion $.

So now equiped and trained with US diplomatic support they tried to claim "their land" again. They broke the peace treaty at night, while people were sleeping, ruined the capital of the Ossetia with artillery and rocket fire, then entered the town heavily armored, killing in one night 2000 civilians and 10 russian peacekeepers.

Now they're on the run, but a lot of georgian still say "we will return"....

It would be similar to the thousands of illegal Mexicans living in California suddenly trying to annex that portion of California back to Mexico. Picture Arnold Schwarzenegger launching a massive airstrike and blasting Felipe Calderón back into the stone age.

The reason is that all Ossetians want to become an independent nation and/or  be annexed by Russia.  90 percent of  South Ossetia population today is citizens of Russian Federation.

That you can offer - to destroy or evict all native population of republic and give Georgia empty territory which it applies on?

South Ossetia - it is Kosovo today. Georgia - it is Serbia today. Russian aircrafts bombing Georgia - this is NATO aircrafts bombing Yugoslavia.
