Why Do Black Southerners Think California Is Only Full Of White People?

Question

Ok so I move to North Carolina from my native state of California. I'm a black girl with a valley girl accent and I don't care. I can clearly pronounce all my words and it doesn't sound like jumbled up english like all the kids my age (I'm 20 yrs old) want to sound like. Even in Cali they're praised for sounding like morons, but out here in the south some of their accent are thick.

Well I was asking my friend (she's born & raised out here) and one of her friends if they've ever been to any part of Cali and they said no. Then I asked if they've been to Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas. I guess they got irritated and my friend said, "Why are you naming off all the white states?" I was puzzled as to what she meant.

Then they're like, "there must be a lot of white people in california and that's why you talk like that." They're both black and I felt insulted.

How can they say California is white when they've never been there? They're giving me a bad impression of southerners.

I know how much you know of the US HISTORY but if you know anything at or you can do research and find out yourself.  I think that is stupid to call states one way or the other. If any state is to be called a white state in my opinion that sounds like whites hating blacks I would call Louisiana a white state because a lot of blacks got left behind in the hurricane disaster. That just makes me mad and I am a Native American. I am sorry and hope I haven't offended you but I think your friends should learn some history. Please don't forget about the Native Americans.

I'm pretty sure all black southerners don't feel this way, and you're generalizing based on the few you've come across, just like the hicks you've dealt with are generalizing.  You're both judging a huge group of people based on very little real knowledge.  Why don't you find some more educated, or at least better traveled friends and see how the persepective changes.

Well for some they identify their culture according to superficial things such as speech, dress, residency or music. I guess your "friends" are too young to remember N.W.A, 2Pac, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Ice- T, Too Short, Eazy-E and I could go on. All their songs talked about was life in California.

They must not know that Venus and Serena Williams are both from Cali as well. You're friends sound closed minded and ignorant, sorry.

Black Southerners that I know think anyone who talks "white" (ie not eubonics)  is an Uncle Tom.  When my mom's school tried to interest everyone in learning speech and table etiquette, there were parents calling like crazy, saying "My son/daughter is good enough how he/she is. Why are you trying to teach them to be white?"  They were VERY irate.  My guess is, you sound "white" to them, and I know tons of racists - white, Black, and Latino.  You'll get prejudiced comments often down here.

I wonder if your friends don't understand that LA is in Cali?

Knew some [black] dudes from Cali who moved to the south and they got thrashed on their pronunciations as well.

I guess it really depends which part of Cali you go... According to the 2006 ACS Estimates, California's population is:

    * 59.8% White American

    * 35.9% are Hispanic or Latino (of any race).

    * 12.3% Asian American

    * 6.2% Black or African American

    * 3.3% mixed

    * 0.7% American Indian

but then again, Americans probably think Canadians are all white and lumberjacks...
