Question:

Why Do I smell sulfur when I "try" to start my riding lawn mower?

I've been having trouble for a long time with my Simplicity regent. It has a Kohler high output 16 horse engine. Ever since I bought it 4 years ago, every six months or so I have to take it back for starting problems.

REPLACED.

Battery

Ignition switch

some safety switch

carb jet nozzles

I had a melted connector on my solenoid I replace. Now the battery seems to not have enough to get it going. When I hook it up to my battery charger on jump start mode it takes off. Then when I go to just battery the starter seems to kick in but not enough to turn the fly wheel? I just got the starter tested and it works great. Then just recently the sulfur smell. Please, the local dealer couldn't find it after six services. Help if anyone can!

  1.        The smell you of sulfur is probably coming from your battery and I will bet your starting problem is the battery. I am guessing you have one of those motor cycle batterys on your mower. If  so, If they aren't kept charged they go bad very quickly. The melted connector on the solenoid could have been just a loose connection that caused that. I would check all your electrical connections and be sure they are tight if you have a loose connection the battery can not charge. it will also cause heat which will cut down the voltage to the starter. Fill free to send me a e-mail if you wish. Hope I have been some help.

  2. From this side of the computer it sounds like the starter is bad. Or the cables from the battery to the starter. Or does this thing have a starter relay? Sorry, starting and electrical problems are hard to track down let alone on this side of the screen.
