Why Do Ladybirds Have Spots?

Is there a purpose to them or is it just nature being weird?

  9. Excellent answer, Phillip!  But the real reason is that  being red probably has some kind of survival value, but being solid red may set them up to be food for another species.  So the spots may help them blend in with the foliage.  Evolution is truly amazing!
