Question:

Why Do People Think Rodeo Is Cruel?

Okay, I want to hear from people who tend to look at both sides of the story. I'm a girl, and I'm thirteen, and if I get a horse I'm definently going to compete in the Junior High Rodeo Asscoiation, and events like, Barrel racing, team roping, pole bending, breakaway roping, and goat tying. And here is a couple videos. This video is the ONLY video on Youtube that actually shows the other side of the story on rodeo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGzZqCQlOkg

  1. Personally my version of fun is not throwing animals around, tackling them, making them buck, and tying them up. It cruel inhumane and just stupid. The video says there's another side to every story, so what's the other side to animal fighting? Can you tell me the other side of that? What is it really a beautiful sport watching two animals kill eachother? No it's not and neither is the Rodeo. That video was c**p and I didn't believe a word it said.

  2. they think they ar hurtting the animals

  3. I didn't watch the videos....I am a huge rodeo fan....I go to the DNCFR every year in my hometown. This year I met my boyfriend. :)

Rodeo CAN be cruel.....this year (just last weekened in fact) someone was on a bronc horse and the "helper horse" tripped and fell, the bronc collided with the horse that was down, and it completely snapped the helper horse's leg in half. It was completely detached.......I have different feeling.....I love rodeos, but when something like that happens it makes it seem inhumane.....;(

I'll always be a rodeo fan, but people are right about some thing....it can be brutal and unfair to animals....I kinda wish they could do something about it, but there is nothing.

    Same with horse racing, etc.

  4. Personally I have seen both sides of competitions. I've seen every side to the competitions. When you have the lower ranked ones, sure the animals aren't treated as highly as in the higher ranked ones, but that's not saying all rodeos are bad.  I know people who get treated and live in a lot worse conditions than some of the animals that are used in rodeos.

I'm from the north and when we do rodeos or say anything about it people shake their heads. But you can throw horse shoes on all four hoofs, constricting growth and blood flow which is bad. Throw saddles on your horses that don't fit and cause the transverse process on the vertebrae to rub together causing tons of pain. Throw a bit in their mouth no matter how harsh, just because "he doesn't act right"; is it the horse or the fact that it's unhappy?

Now I’m not being hypocritical because like me if you do things right and make sure it's not just for winning, or your first priority is the animal and its health, then you are fine and this is not directed at you!

My horse, we showed him Huntseat, my trainer put him through h**l and a half, and I finally stopped showing him because he hated every single minute of it. Started riding him in a nicer big western saddle that distributed weight over his entire back, and threw a hackamore on him, and just let him run, his fifteen seconds in a barrel course and he was done with that and was totally happy. His mood increased by about a hundred times. He hates going in circles, having his head tied down so that he has the "perfect" headset, and going through hours of riding.

Now of course at lower ranked rodeos, the care of the animals isn’t going to be the same as in the higher ranked ones. But most associations these days have certain rules for the animal’s sake. They can’t be unhealthy looking, underweight or malnourished. Take the bulls of the PBR…they are treated like kings. Those bulls work 8 seconds a weekend maybe 16, but they go home and get off a trailer.  If you are trailering your animals they have to be let out I think on an average of every two hours to stretch or something.  Most rodeo associations are becoming much more animal friendly or at least becoming more outgoing about the treatment of animals.

Some of the events in the rodeo do get a little rough but that isn’t saying that it isn’t something that wouldn’t happen in any other sport. You have a horse that’s acting up, lunge him for a half an hour…you run that animal into the ground. You ride a bull for 15 seconds. The bull does less work than that poor horse.

Honestly there is no way that people who have their minds made up will ever look at rodeos from both sides. But I completely agree with you and say get your horse and rodeo with them. Just don’t push to hard, and you’ll do fine!
