  4. They are protecting themselves and seem to be very effective since they are so abundant and widespread.  Look at it this way:  Some DNA found a way to replicate itself.  The outcome was stinging nettles.

  5. I would think they are there to protect their surrounding environment / plants / animal life form from predatory insects and threats - bit like body guards.

    Think I;ll get me some to push infront of me in a buggy and stick some out of my handbag lol
