Why is it that the British people pay allegiance to a German monarch. Do they not have any British people they can grovel to?

It will be even worse when Prince Charles becomes King as he is half Greek!

  1. What utter rubbish some people come up with ,Nobody in Britain is pure English ,Except a few Ancient Britain's that escaped to Cornwall and Wales, and I expect they have mixed blood now  The Queens  Great Great Grandfather was a German so what ,Theres nothing wrong with Germans ,or Greeks ,America and Australia are full of people from both those races   the Second World War finished over 60 years ago ,Get over it

  2. Because of jus soli,Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is English, although she is a descendant of German people. This question has been asked a lot of times.

  3. this isn't important. is strange find any king that come from the country. for example, the king of spain and the dukes of luxembourg come from France (the house of Bourbon)- the quuen ef spain is princess of greece and his brother (the crown prince come from denmark.

  4. So what?

    Care for some trouble matte??

  5. Queen Elizabeth II was born in the United Kingdom, as were her parents, and has lived there her entire life.  Doesn't that make her British?

That's like asking "Why do Americans elect a [insert ethnic group here] as their president?"  It doesn't matter what the president's ethnic background is, as long as he/she was born in the United States and is qualified to be the leader.

  6. The british are a mixed people for example the black german princess with spanish roots http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/...

  7. Who cares what their ancestors lived or were born?

The British Royal's have lived in the UK for decades (if not centuries) surely that counts?

I like the Royals, and for the first answerer, if you can't give up 61p for the Royal Family, it's a bad job, for the amount of Behind the Scenes work they do...

  8. The present monarchy does have German ancestry and as you rightfully pointed out the Duke of Edinburgh is part Greek.  However they are descended from at least William I.  I do not grovel in front of anyone, I pay homage to my Queen as she is the rightful ruler of this land.  As Jesus said when  questioned about taxes, "give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's".

Remember Brothers and Sisters we are not to be like Kings and Lord over others, but to be like Servants, humble and giving.  We are servants of the Servant King and not servant is greater than his master, they Crucified Jesus so we should expect no greater treatment.

  9. We DO pay allegiance to a German monarch! The royal family's true name was Saxe Coburg Gother (not sure about the spelling, sorry) and during the war they changed their name to Windsor....how convenient. They are a load of bloodsuckers who live off the fat of the land and suck it dry.  The Queen Mother visiting the blitz damaged East End of London was a total insult, the royal family were still quaffing vintage Champagne and eating the best of food and partying hard at all the best places while the East End half starved to death whilst having nowhere to live. "at least we can look the East End in the eye" she cried after a graze from a bomb at Buckingham Palace (the Royals could not have been further from the bombsite if they tried) I would have spat in her greedy condescending, selfish eye let alone look her in it! Most Brits do not grovel to any monarch and the half Greek Charles is just a babbling nutter who walks around talking to plants and shares his bed with a horse. Nuff said!

  10. BECAUSE I'M A ROYALIST AND PROUD OF IT !

  11. This  question was posted here before. The Queen is a citizen of the UK;her mother was born Scottish. Philip is not Greek;he is a prince of Greece but has no Greek blood. He is Danish and German. He is also a naturalized citizen of the UK. Royals happen to be very intermarried;this bunch happens to be the result of Queen Victoria's plan to have all her family members occupying the thrones of Europe,in order to bring peace, friendship and unity to Europe.Unfortunately her plan failed and she was constantly reminding her children and children in-laws (Particularly her daughter Vicky and her Danish-born  daughter-in-law,Alexandra,both who's countries -Germany for Vicky's husband,Denmark-the birthplace of Alexandra-)that they were princes and princesses of Britain, their home.

Being racist is not being wise. Most people can claim that they are a member of many different ethnic-groups that are scattered all over Europe. In England there's been Normans,Anglo-Saxons...maybe you should study your history before you post thoughtless questions!

Oh,and this is for boneyard: I am American and happen to know quite a lot about European history so don't make stupid assumptions that the questioner must be an American. There are many British anti-monarchists who spew their hateful rhetoric here. So don't blame Americans!

  12. I am Scottish & I grovel to no-one.

  13. Its not allegiance we pay, we pay them out of our hard earned taxes, what a joke!!!!!

  14. I am British and I totally agree. I would love the monarchy to be abolished - we pay taxes for them to live a life of luxury when they aren't even allowed to make the laws for the country.

  15. There must be a tag team or something that passes off the duty of posting this question every other day. Maybe you should read the answers to the previous times it's been asked.

  16. We do not pay allegiance to a german monarch. Elizabeth II was born in London. her mother is Scottish and her father George VI was born in this country----what on earth are you talking about

  17. to start with we dont grovel as you put it to the Royal Family and secondly we don t pay allegiance to  German Monarch the queen it totally British i sugest you read this

    King George VI (1936 - 1952)

Full Name: Albert Frederick Arthur George

Born: December 14, 1895 at Sandringham, Norfolk

    Relation to Elizabeth II: father

    House of: Windsor

Ascended to the throne: Dec 11, 1936 aged 40 years

Crowned: May 12, 1937 at Westminster

    Married: Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon

    Children: Elizabeth and Margaret

Died: February 6, 1952 at Sandringham, Norfolk, aged 56 years, 1 month, and 22 days

    Buried at: Windsor

Reigned for: 15 years, 1 month, and 25 days

The Duke of York, second son of George V. had never expected or wished to succeed to the throne, and his brother’s abdication cast a burden which weighed on him more heavily than it might have done on others. He was naturally diffident and anxious, and suffered from a speech impediment. But he never lacked bravery or enterprise. He had fought as a young naval officer at Jutland, and was the first member of the Royal Family to learn to fly; and his sense of duty was invincible. Fortified by the influence of his Queen, who swiftly acquired immense popularity in her own right, King George coped with the aftermath of the Abdication in a way that quickly restored confidence in the monarchy.

When the horrors of the Second World War descended shortly afterwards on Britain, and on London in particular, the royal couple rose superbly to the occasion. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth stayed at what they and their subjects saw as their posts all through the Blitz, and showed love and care for their people in gestures that stilled the meanest critics. Their daughters served in uniform, and the identification of the Royal Family with the national will was complete.

The effort, however, was crushing and the King’s health was permanently affected. He died suddenly in the winter of 1952

    Queen Elizabeth II (1952 - )

    Full Name: Elizabeth Alexandra Mary

Born: April 21, 1926 at London

    House of: Windsor

Ascended to the throne: February 6, 1952 aged 25 years

Crowned: June 2, 1953 at Westminster

    Married: Philip Mountbatten

Children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward

Current Age: 81 years, 8 months, and 23 days

She has Reigned for: 55 years, 11 months, and 6 days

Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born in London on 21 April 1926; she was educated privately, and assumed official duties at 16. During World War II she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, and by an amendment to the Regency Act she became a state counsellor on her 18th birthday. On the death of George VI in 1952 she succeeded to the throne while in Kenya with her husband and was crowned on 2 June 1953.

The reign of Queen Elizabeth II since 1952 has spanned a period of rapid and occasionally turbulent change. Britain’s position in the world, her economy, and the very shape and structures of society have all been transformed and many traditional institutions have suffered in the process. Through all this, the path of the Crown has been marked out by The Queen herself, in a prolonged display of unwavering devotion to duty and quiet pragmatism which has met a nationally-felt need, and has won her the unstinting respect and affection of her peoples. As hereditary head of state for Great Britain and Northern Ireland, The Queen has symbolic and formal functions and duties but no direct powers. She is an embodiment of national identity and continuity and, with her family, performs countless formalities to mark events in the lives of individuals and communities and provides valuable patronage for innumerable charities.

Supported by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to whom she was married on 20 November 1947, The Queen is head of a large family. The first child of the royal marriage and the current heir to the throne is Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, who was born on 14 November 1948 and was invested as Prince of Wales at Caernarvon Castle on 1 July 1969. He married Lady Diana Spencer ( Princess Diana ) on 29 July 1981; two sons were born to the marriage, Prince William, born 21 June 1982 and Prince Henry ( Prince Harry ), born 15 September 1984. However, the marriage broke down amid widely-publicised bitterness, and a divorce followed. These troubles, together with the divorces of Princess Anne and the Duke of York, were seen by some to diminish the monarchy in public esteem. The death of Diana, Princess of Wales on 31 August 1997 in a car crash in Paris unleashed a wave of hysteria stirred up by the media, and the family have had to suffer relentless intrusion by the world's press into their lives.

Elizabeth II is now the longest reigning British monarch since Queen Victoria, and The Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002 was celebrated with enthusiasm and great displays of loyalty. The Prince of Wales, after suffering a period of unpopularity, has shown resilience and willingness to meet the public half-way in its new mood. His long-established concern for the disadvantaged sections of society enables him to meet on common ground many who might be put off by grandeur and pomp, while his evident devotion to his two sons has won him a real measure of respect. Prince Charles’s willingness to accept change is reflected, too, throughout the institution of the monarchy. This has altered significantly in recent times with The Queen’s decision to pay tax, changes being made to the Civil List, and the opening of Buckingham Palace to the public to help fund the restoration of Windsor Castle. Debate about the future of the monarchy continues, but the Royal Family has shown itself willing to contemplate evolutionary change, and the Crown of Britain has entered the twenty-first century with renewed vigour and fresh purpose

  18. Some of us are trying for independence so that the days of grovelling are in the past.

  19. This question is completely stupid and dumb. If you occupy any country in the UK for over 7 years by law they are Welsh Irish Scottish or English depending on which country they are occupying.

So just because our ancestors came to this Ireland from main land Europe no one is British are they? Ok how about everyone on the planet is African as the first human beings Evolved in Africa. Starting to understand how illogical this question is?

Also people here criticising the Monarch are you really happy with this so called Democracy? Because i for one think that the Monarch would do a better job running this country than this Brussels run labour party.

  20. A bit of Xenophobia creeping in here.  Who can claim to be "pure" British i.e. No Norman blood, no Celtic blood, no Viking blood and so on.  The Royal family are as pure British as you can get, do a wonderful job, and bring in huge amounts of tourists to the country.   Their worth to the country as a foreign exchange earner makes the relatively paltry amount paid in the Royal List pale into insignificance..  Ask any American if they would like our Royal Family, and you would get a resounding "YES"

  21. I don't viva la Republic!

  22. they dont itsthe other way round they pay us to bring there planes in ans of fear because if they dont theyll get beaten the sh_t out off them

  23. I take it that you are not a Brit then !

I will presume you are American............Ha Ha ....................now there is a Mongrel race for you.

I am not a staunch Royalist however the Royal Family does somehow give continuity and a sense of History that we can share as a nation. As for their ethnicity, I think it is great that there is such a mix in their ancestry, just as there is in the population.

As for "Grovelling" You make me smile when I think of your leaders, Past ( Nixon ) present ( Bush ) and future ( Obama or Clinton ).Grovelling indeed !

  24. I think in the case of British royalties we can never be certain

e.g. William I the Conqueror Duke of Normandy invade Britain and become its ruler there fore theoretically all the British monarchs from then on have French descent.

Another example is the exclusion of all catholics in the line of succession and therefore leads to the election of George I the elector of Hanover who doesn't even speaks english. Therefore technically the British through their Parliament chose to be ruled by a German royal family in 1701 through the act of settlement.

but anyway, all the royalties always married each other to keep the fortune within the family. e.g. Queen Victoria at one time was the grandmother of the King of Great Britain, Kaiser of Germany and the Tsar of Russia.

  25. To a certain extent I agree. It's important to have a monarch, if only to impress other countries who are used to grovelling to a politician elected by dubious means every so many years.

Personally, I'd prefer the system used by one of the Scandinavian countries I think, I can't remember which, where they pay the monarch and spouse a reasonable salary and keep them in a posh flat somewhere and the palace is normally a museum, dusted off now and then when needed for state occasions. They also pay the heir and spare, who also have "normal" jobs.  The rest of the hangers-on have to make their own way. At least they know who is going to be nominally in charge for the foreseeable future . . .

And our monarch isn't German, her parents were born in this country and so was she.

  26. I refuse to pay allegiance to ANY monarch.

  27. English and proud of my Queen and Country

  28. 99% of the British population are of mixed race. It includes German,French,Norwegian,Swedish, Irish, Danish and almost every other country in Europe.

So the Royal Family are part Greek, and part German. There is certainly likely to be Spanish in there somewhere as well.

This makes your statement and question really small minded and maybe a little racist.

  29. The royal families are all intermarried.  Charles I's sister Elizabeth married the the Elector of Hanover, and after all of Charles I descendants through his sons died (Charles II had no legitimate heirs, and James II' daughters Mary and Anne had no surviving children, the British skipped James' son by his Catholic wife, Mary of Modena, (James the old Pretender) and chose George I, descendant of Elizabeth.  George I never learned to speak English.

  30. Queen Elizabeth II is not German - she was born in the U.K., as were her father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great grandmother, great-great-great grandfather, and great-great-great-great grandfather.

  31. Who do you classify as British?

Britain has been ruled by kings and queens who decended from Danish, French and Gothic invaders.  The petty kings of England were Danish, the Angles, the Saxons (both Gothic tribes - not Germans), till William the Conqueror took the throne, and he was French.

The Scots ruled Britain until they ceded the throne to the Hannoverians - not Germans. Through Victoria & Albert's marraige the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas reigned - not Germans. This all happened before 1871 and the birth of Germany. No German has ever reigned over Britain, though many of their Royal Houses were clans or tribes of what became Germany later.

If you chose to believe movies such as The Last Legion or King Arthur, which states that the Roman Commander becomes Arthur, he, then too, was not British.

Thus, in the last 1500 years, Britain has had no British monarch, as the Queen is of Belgian decent (Prince Albert was Belgian, as the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha is the Belgian Royal House, est 1839 before V&A's marraige) and Prince Charles thus half-Belgian half German, as his father was paternally German after 1871.

In theory, Charles will be the first German King as his father is paternally German.

    It never ends!
