  4. Back when the story was created porridge was a common meal. It may not have been breakfast and was probably referring to pease porridge which was a staple of the British diet during ht middle ages. It is also mentioned in the rhyme Pease Porridge Hot (see link). The original story appeared in print in the early 1800's but came from a much older story that was told to children by their parents.

    It was also used because there were three varying degrees of warmth to the bowls of porridge (too hot, too cold and just right). You couldn't have that realistically with something that was served cold or room temperature.

  8. porridge (oatmeal or a type of stew/soup) was a very common meal.  I suppose that's why it was used.  

    Also Goldi wouldn't want any of the aged raw meat bears usually keep around their caves.
