Recently at a family event one of our Four year old cousins asked all of our family memebers why do we have clouds? I know its the chemical make up of the atmosphere, and I can look up the definition so thats not what I need as an anwser, but the real question is... how do you explain to a four year old why we have clouds?

  1. Tell your cousin this:

After it rains the sun soaks(evaporation) up all the rain and it forms clouds. Then when the clouds are really full from all that rain it rains again

  2. water from oceans, etc. evaporates into the atmosphere. This water vapour floats up to certain level in the atmosphere relative to its density compared to other gases found in the air. As more water evaporates, it condenses to form clouds. If the cloud condenses too much and becomes too heavy, it starts falling as rain or snow.

  3. because a blue sky all the time would be boring

  4. just tell them that clouds are important. They add beauty and variety to the sky. Earth without clouds would be rainless. Without rain earth would become sterile and lifeless. clouds are needed to make rainfall.. thats because all clouds are made up of tiny water droplets and ice crystals. Water has a unique trait. It has the ability to change from a vapor to a liquid to a solid and back again..

    i hope its simple enough
