it started because he got a gold in the 1992 olympics, that mixed with his good looks and hard punch allowed him plenty of tv exposure (his first fight was televised by a network, doesnt usally happen until a fighter has around 15-20 fights), on top of that, every teenage girl in america wanted to marry him, and were happy to pay $50 to see every one of his fights, he is also well spoken and doesnt mumble or stutter during tv interviews (unlike his business partner bernard hopkins). now that he is older he doesnt have the teeny bopper fans anymore but people will still buy his fights because he represents the longone era of the 90's and how good it was for boxing and for america, i dont know but i would guess 30% goes to forbes and 70% to de la hoya, perhaps even 20% forbes and 80% de la hoya

Well, I would like to go from another angle. First, women do not order pay per view for boxing at least not in large numbers. So, I would propose that it is males with latent homosexual tendencies are the ones who covet his good looks. Now these guys live out their fantasy through de la hoya. I would ask what are their fantasies? And why do boxers on the opposed end of the spectrum like Tyson also net large amounts of money? I believe these guys are sado masticates who love to watch pretty guys get dominated by mean thugs, sounds like a homo erotic novel to me. There is no other reason to be a dela hoya fan, unless you are Mexican and get some sort of pride from backing a guy who didn't even fight in the Olympics for your country (USA remember). Dela is irrelevant like Tyson, but he is still a icon for reasons other than his skill.

He draws so much because America loves a clean cut good image guy.   He also draw because he is Mexican & they love their boxing.   Years ago he was a great boxer now he's just a draw that isn't very good.   He beat Ricardo Mayorga & that's the last time I saw him actually look good in a fight.   Mayweather Jr beat him easily & he got killed by Bernard Hopkins & that's why he took such a long layoff.  

It's funny because Mayweather Jr, Cotto, Mosley, Paul Williams & Margaritto are all better fighters than Oscar but they just don't have the star appeal that he has.   He's fighting a guy that lost on the contender & making 15 million that's ridicilious.  

It's funny he won't fight Hopkins again,  or Jermain Taylor, or Kelly Pavilk or anyone that's a threat for him to get KO'd again.  I'll watch the fight because its on HBO & I hope Oscar gets beat!!!!
