Does Autism go away with age? My 3-year-old daughter is going through an evaluation process since she has a speech delay. We have had her on a Gluten/Casein Free Diet for 13 days now and has not shown any improvment in her speech. Will she just eventually learn how to say more sentences over time? Do adults have autism??? I'm so confused and desperately want answers. Thanks for any help.

  1. My dad used to work with Children and Adults who had mild to severe Autism. Autism will never go away. They have cases more severe then others- Some cases that are extremely mild. Babies who are born with autism will grow up with it. The only thing you can do is work with your daughter and teach her as much as she can handle at one time. Patience is a major virtue when it comes to autism. Just remember that she's just a little behind then most children but still needs you. Love, Support, and a mom is what she needs!

  2. My son has autism . . . and while there is no cure . . . he has shown remarkable improvement and has been mainstreamed with his kindergarten class . . . he's been in therapy for a little over  a year and speaks in complete sentences, holds conversations, and is verbally inquisitive.  If you met my son you really wouldn't think much about it . . . I think "spacey" might better describe him  . . . He's done really well and I'm sure you daughter will as well . . . If you need advice or someone to talk to, please email me via my profile.  It's going to get better.  Hang in there.

  3. Autism does NOT go away with age.  My brother is an adult living with autism.  He is 41 and getting more ornary every year.  There is so much more research and attempts to help the autistic community than there was when he was growing up.  He had a teacher when my dad was stationed in California who was wonderful.  She was working with him and by the time my dad was stationed on the east coast, she had him working on basic reading, telling time, and basic math.  She was doing WONDERFUL things.   When my parents got to Virginia and went to his IEP meeting they were armed with the materials that he was working on in California and had planned on having those skills refined and built upon.  The sad thing is that they told my parents "we don't do that here....  Here we focus on life skills"  It was a total copout. They learned to recognize restroom signs and poisonous labels and things like that. Long story short, the school never worked on those skills again, and I am pretty sure that those skills are lost now much to our dismay. My brothers speech is no better now than it was when he was in his school years.  Autism is a life long battle, not only for the individual but for their family as well.  Diet is not always an effective solution.  There are still so many unknowns.

No Child Left Behind is a WONDERFUL victory for the parents of special education students. At least they have to try now to teach reading and math.  The schools failed my brother, but now children have the right to a Free Appropriate Public Education in the Least Restrictive Environment.   If you would like to e-mail me through my profile, I would be happy to answer any  further questions you might have.

  4. I am a parent of a child that was born with Autism and Mental Retardation. My child is now an adult.  My child was diagnosed with an ASD when my child was between 2 and 5 years old. As an adult, my child still has Autism and is still non-verbal.

Autism can not be cured. Autism will be with the person for the rest of their life. But with early childhood intervention, it is possible for the child to make progress in different skills that need to be learned.

  5. There are many adults with autism as autism does not go away with age. Autism is a pervasive development disorder which means you are born with it and will have it for the rest of your life. The reason not so many adults have a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder is because it is a relatively newly discovered condition. When the adults of today were children ASD was not used as much as not a lot was known about the condition. These children were given other labels that we would not use today or would come under the heading of an ASD. My own father has been seen as eccentric all his life but at the age of 70 was diagnosed as having Asperger syndrome. We know understand his eccentric behaviours and can to a point understand them. Some people on the autistic spectrum do improve and special diets and therapies can sometimes help but they will never cure an ASD. Accept your daughter how she is and make the most of her. My own daughter has an ASD and is one of the most interesting and funny people you could wish to meet, I wouldn't want her any other way. Good luck with your daughter.

  6. There are not nearly as many because the disorder used to be rare.

There has been an explosion of neurological damaged children starting in approx 1990.

It corresponds exactly with the massive increase in the number of vaccinations given to babies and pregnant women.

vaccines cause most autism and numerous other neorological disorders.

go here for a good article in how we got here.

13 days is way to short a time to see results although milk sensitivity symptoms clear in that time the gluten part takes six months. give it more time and then decide.

I have utilized inf from this web site to assist me in recovering my child with great success. You need answers and support and you will find them here. Our pediatrician was no help at all-0-none.

  7. children with autism grow up to be adults with autism.  though some symptoms may improve with therapy, it never goes away.

  8. It really depends on the severity of the autism. There is mild, moderate, and severe. I have seen some children make significant progress. There is no cure for autism but I have seen adults that are very high functioning autistic hold down jobs and act indepedently. For more information on autism, go to the Autism Sociey of America website! It is very helpful!

  9. Autism does not go away with age and there is no known cure for it. Autism is usually diagnosed in childhood and it's important that it's treated right from childhood, which is why there is so much discussion about children with autism. When treatment starts early in the child's life there are greater chances of the child being able to learn some of the skills they lack.

There are not as many resources specifically for adults with autism, because they've usually been diagnosed and treated to some extent before they reach adulthood.

  10. I think this tends to be the focus because it's thought that the children will be able to get along better in society if they are helped early on.

There are adults with autism out there, but one of the reasons you probably don't hear so much about them is because Autism as an actual disorder has only been recognised for a reletivaley short period so even though there are adults out there who have autism they may not be diagnosed or they may not have got the help they needed so are probably thought to be beyond help. Some may have also been misdiagnosed.

It's better when you are trying to highlight an issue to talk about those who can be helped.

It doesn't go away with age though. I've worked with a four year old with autism but I also know of teenagers who have it. One of whom just graduated.

The symptoms can either lessen or grow worse as people get older, it tends to depend on their treatment and the assistance they are given.

Also if it went away with age there would be some evidence that it can be cured (by something at least) which there is not.

  11. It takes WAY longer than 13 day to see a difference .. and even then it won't go away completely.. have you read Jenny McCarthy's book ?  Adults do have autism.. it changes.. my brother has autism and when he was younger he was really hyper and talked alot .. now he is 23? 24? and the opposite very quiet and mellow..  but we never tried all those gluten free diets or anything special on him.. supposedly it really can make a difference..
