Why Does My IPod Touch Always Backup?

Every Time I Connect My IPod Touch To My Computer The First Thing Itunes Asks Me Is "We Found Purchased Items On Your Ipod Would You Like To Transfer" I Click NO But The The Ipod Starts Backing Up I Don't Know If That Means Its Transferring My Purchases But It Always End Up Taking Like 30 min. Can Anyone Tell Me Why It Does This Or If Backing Up Means Its Transferring My Purchases-Or Some Way I Can Make It Stop Doing This......

it is copying your purchases in case you accidentally lose them and in which case - unless backed up - is like having a dvd nicked or broken.
