Why Does My Laptop Over-Heat and Shut off?

Pretty much everyday the laptop gets really hot then it gets all slow, then it shuts down and we have to let it cool down for about an hour.

is there a way to fix this or is this permanent in which we need a new one?

CPU fan is dead.

Check the fans are working if they are visible.  Also try to run it on a flat surface, such as a desk or table.  If you can get hold of a can of air or air duster, try blasting the vents and fans with this.  Make sure the laptop is switched off when you do this.
