Question:

Why Does My Urine Suddenly Smell Like Butter?

The odor is so strong I can smell it while I'm peeing. No other changes: color, frequency, no blood, etc.... This has been going on for two weeks, since I started taking iron and horse chestnut. I'm also taking cranberry, cinnamon, Vitamins C and E, and fish oil. Could one of these be doing it? Thanks for any help.

  1. You are most likely smelling Butyrate.  Butyrate is a short chain fatty acid produced in the intestinal tract by certain forms of bacteria living there.

Butyrate is a vital nutrient for the health of your colon.  Medical studies even suggest that higher levels of butyrate may help protect against colon cancer.

The supplements you are taking (especially cinnamon and horse chestnut) may be changing the balance of bacteria living in your gut.  This change may be the cause of the high rate of butyrate production (which is being absorbed into your blood stream and then being excreted in your urine.

Note: Butter contains high amounts of butyrate.

    Best wishes.
