  1. A coastal spit is a very unique habitat and ecosystem.  It is formed from the process of long shore drift where sand and sediment is carried by water currents and deposited off the edge of a land mass forming a peninsula like land form.  I live only about 10 minutes from Sandy Hook, NJ which is one of these spits.

they have so many land uses because they have so many types of habitats each with its own economic value.   If you take Sandy Hook for instance it has plenty of beaches (on an ocean side and on a bay side) so that is a major one.  Another one is the fact that it also has a distinct upland habitat which can be inhabited as a forest, grassland or many other types of ecosystems.  Sandy Hook is home to one of the last American Holly forests on the eastern sea board.

What makes it so interesting is the fact that these habitats are so close to one another but co-exist perfectly.  Just the fact that it is a coastal and often times scenic landform with several different havbitats make it useful for several different types of land use.
