  1. You have two distinct answers from the first and the immediate one following. If you know your history, the first plainly states actual facts. On the other hand, there's the one tired of "the role of peacekeeper". No facts. Why do we see ourselves as peacekeepers? Actually we don't. The world does, and the denouncers are the ones not wanting our presence so they can rule without citizen rights. As for our country's denouncers, they don't understand their privledge of denouncing was, is and will forever be given to them by those service men and women serving our country.

  2. How many lives has the U.S. government saved and/or improved because of our reaching out to others?

That's right, our military and political intervention never solved anything... Oh, Except Nazism, Totalitarianism, Facism, Communism, and genocide.

I will remind you that it was because of U.S. intervention that these people's grandparents did not become ash in the bottom of Hitler's furaces.

I will remind you that the U.S. offers more personal freedoms to its citizens (and non-citizens) than any other country in the world.

I will remind you that the U.S. offers more foreign aid, in the form of medicine and research to combat disease, food to combat hunger, money to combat poverty, etc. than ANY other country in the world. No nation has ever done as much to protect human rights, both domestically and abroad than the U.S. has.

Because we have so much and because we are willing to contribute so much, we have taken on a responsibility that no one else on this earth cared to do. With responsibility though, comes power. For that, many are jealous.

Other Nations want and take everything they are offered from the U.S., from money, to food, to the lives of our soldier who have fought and died for them, but they resent us for the stature which we have achieved.

As far as the U.N. goes... p**s on them. Their new tactic is to become a world government - to gain control over sovereign nations by using environmental and peace crusade fear tactics. Take for instance the Kioto Treaty which is supposedly an environmental safeguard for nations that care. The U.S. now is being deamonized because of our refusal to sign it, while Italy and Japan owe the UN over HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars in fines because of their inability to conform to it. I bet their taxpayer are just thrilled! In reality Kioto is just one more way for the UN to gain control over nations.

  3. The US is looked at as a peacekeeper, because , and you may find this hard to believe,  most nations know we will be fair and try and do what is right.

  4. Most of us don't, but Bush does, and he's one slippery SOB.  He thinks he's above the law, and he's issued more signing statements than any other President just to make that point.  If it weren't for the few remaining checks and balances, he probably would have us in World War III by now.

  5. Its a neocon ideology that in order to achieve peace we must go through war.

  6. Voice of Liberty is right on!

  7. Many of us are tired of this role of peacekeeper!

Most Americans could care less about what the UN does.  They have little credibility and are usually against the USA.

  8. We have become so at the behest of others. There are a lot of treaties that compel us to act. And sometimes political gains are the reasons. Often we get involved for humanitarian purposes. But as is said, and so often forgotten, " No good deed goes unpunished".

  9. Because the rest of the world is too busy cowering in their houses and caving in to the terrorists (see Spain after the terrorist attack there).

  10. I think it's the hypocrisy that offends me most.  All this "making the world safe for democracy" stuff is pure B.S.  All the U.S. military actions around the world are based on greed, power, control or distraction.  I believe the U.S. is still very influential with the U.N., but less than it was before Bush started making unilateral decisions and running the U.S. deficit through the roof.

  11. "influence in the U N"  Let see if one customer represented 40% of your income how important would he be too you? Or should he be too you?

  12. It doesn't - at least not in reality.  The USA provides more arms to the rest of the world then anybody.  And then we go fight them.  Makes sense.

  13. Maybe in 2008 we are more sincere like the Russians and begin admitting that our system is a total failure!

And stop being hypocrites about it.

  14. Our policies have not ended, Communism (China), nor Totalitarianism (North Korea).  This "Peacemaker" idea is just imperialism with a smiley-face sticker attached.

As to "why?"  Well, frankly I have no clue.
