  1. If someone doesn't signal when they switch lanes there is a good chance that signals were optional on that year/make/model of said vehicle.

  2. ITS SIMPLE, MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT LEVEL ON THE SIDE OF THE STEERING COLUMN IS USED FOR AND ALSO MOST PEOPLE NEVER READ THEIR OWNERS MANUAL.

  3. "It's because they don't have the time to do so."  Honest to God, this is the most common reason that was given from a study performed about a year ago.  I heard it on a couple of different radio stations when it first came out, but I can't remember exactly who they said did the study.  I think it may have been the Highway Commission (or whatever is it called) or Insurance Companies.  Anyways, they also found out that something like 44% of all drivers don't use their turn signals when changing lanes.

As for someone slamming into you when changing lanes, it is their fault no matter if they had their turn signal on or not.  They still should have checked their blind spot to make sure that you weren't there, so I don't see what excuse they could give otherwise.

For me personally it takes about half a second to turn on my turn signal and a second (at the most) to turn my head around to check my blindspot, so I don't understand how anybody could use the excuse that using their turn signal takes too long.

EDIT:  I found the study after doing a Google search which you can find here:

"And what reasons do these moving violators have for failing to signal? Disturbingly, 42 percent contest that they simply don’t have time, while 23 percent open up to the realization that they’re merely lazy. An additional 11 percent don’t consider signaling necessary, and 8 percent follow the crowd, choosing not to signal because others don’t. Lastly, 17 percent of respondents leave their signal on and therefore don’t notify surrounding drivers of their intentions."

  4. people don't know how to drive.

  5. If they slam into you, then their insurance has to pay for it. Other than that they would get improper lane change or reckless driving.

  6. I NEVER signal when changing lanes because

    1. The guy in that lane almost ALWAYS speeds up, or

    2. I am making a lane change when it will not affect anyone else.

  7. Signaling when making a change lane, a turn, or anything else while driving is one of the most important things in driving. If you think your action isn't affecting anyone else than that's really close minded. Other drivers need to know where your headed, as well as pedestrians because that determines the actions they will take. It's better road communication simply put. I can't GUESS you're going to switch lanes!

To answer your question - any rear end impact results in the person behind you being at fault. Some insurance companies may treat it differently if it was due to the negligence of the front driver.

  8. For the same reason some people don't turn their headlights on in the rain. They're idiots. The most they can get charged with is improper lane change.
