  1. Modern day trains have a battery powered device which transmits a radio signal to the engineer. This radio signal tells the engineer where the end of his train is located. He can use this information to tell if he has crossed a switch or cleared a grade crossing (roadway). This way, the engineer doesn't stop his train and block the crossing causing a traffic jam, he can pull a little forward so the crossing is clear. These were some of things the men in the caboose would radio to the engineer. Since it is electronic now, there is no need for the caboose or the men on most larger trains.

The device is powered by a series of three large rechargeable batteries which also power a red flashing light to mark the end of the train. Next time a train passes, look closely and you will see this device and should also see the red light too.

  2. a device called the E.O.T  end of train device took the place of the cabooses. (the red you see flashing at the end of the train)

this device controls and checks the air brake psi from back to front an is control from the engine and is by far the safest to way to control a train brakes in case of a quick stop.  technology  wins again in the man vs machine war..

  3. As with many things, modernization changes some things in life. Trains, becoming more modernized, must have lessened the need for a caboose..   When the horse and buggy was in vogue, it was a common means of transportation, until the buggy / car was given a motor and the horse was put out to pasture!  There were still some horses used, but motorized vehicles were the mainstream of public transportation.  I bet you could still see a caboose or two on an older train in some areas... but in larger cities, the newer trains will be dominant! What surprises me is that there are still some trains being used now that flying in airplanes is so much more accessible!

I guess the trains are mostly used now for cargo and freight...
