  1. Their actions would be questioned because Habitat for Humanity is a religiously affiliated corporation.

  2. First off, Habitat for Humanity does not give away homes. Habitat homes are sold to low-income families at no profit and financed through affordable, no-interest loans -- but the family itself must payback the loan.

Why not just give away the homes? For one, the family may then has no investment in the home, no sense of ownership, no sense of responsibility. WIth Habitat, a family doesn't get a free house -- they get an affordable house that is their responsibility to pay off.

You will find that many nonprofit organizations don't give items away; rather, they charge a nominal fee for clothes, clinic services, etc. These programs work much better than giveaway programs, because the recipients tend to value things they have to pay even a little for than something given entirely free.

Look how much more successful microfinancing (tiny loans) are in poor countries, where poor people are given small loans that they must pay back, rather than just cash grants with no strings attached, as far as building up a community's prosperity over the long term.

  3. I agree that would be the ideal but let's face it-they are businesses-and their first concern is the bottom line.

If they donated a house all they would get financially is a tax deduction. If they sell it they make money

  4. Every American has the ability to get at least a high school education. Many choose not to and then the rest of us are left dealing with the fallout.

WAKE UP AMERICA!!! EDUCATION IS THE ONLY WAY OUT OF POVERTY!!!
