  1. Sorry Robert S - the elliptic nature of the earth's orbit is not due to other bodies in the solar system.  Eliminate those bodies and the orbit would still be elliptical.  In fact, the orbit of every planet is an ellipse with the sun at one of the foci.  See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keplerian_p...


  2. The orbit is ALMOST circular not as elliptical as most representations indicate!

    1. The orbits of all the planets vary continually due to the effect of the other bodies orbiting the Sun.

    2. These bodies exert a small gravitational attraction on all the other planets as they become aligned.

    3. This attraction causes minor changes in the orbits of the planets.

    4. Sometimes a more circular orbit than at other times, this causes the wobble in the Earths orbit and also alters the position of the rotational poles of the Earth in relation to the Sun (sometimes a bit more vertical than others) these actions can take thousands of years to be noticed.
