  1. I absolutely agree with Wyomugs. I just want to add that being polite also shows respect and consideration for others. Consider the following situations: Someone goes through a door in front of you and allows it to slam in your face. An elderly person boards a packed bus and none of the young people sitting in the front offer up their seat. You hold the door for a moment to allow the person behind you to catch up and he or she breezes by without saying "thank you" or even glancing in your direction. You make plans with a friend, and she does not show up, does not call, and when you finally track her down, you find that there was no emergency, but only receive a flaky excuse.

Apart from how such behaviors might affect you, they strongly reflect on the person's character. In all of these situations, the person who lacks good manners comes across as extremely self-centered. That isn't the kind of impression you wish to make, is it?

  2. Because guttural utterances and Stinky bodies and slovenly eating habits combined with crude speech and plaque covered teeth with garlic breath is very anti social. You will be lonely without it, no one will take you anywhere or be alone with you, much like a Sasquatch you will be.

  3. Etiquette is the set of rules, guidelines, and behaviors which aid in "greasing the wheels" of social interactions.

Major "no-no's" in society are covered by the LAWS... i.e. robbing, raping, murder, etc.  But it is virtually impossible to have civil LAWS to cover the right vs wrong way of interaction in all situation, especially the more "minor" ones.

Etiquette says that it's good to be courteous, say "Please" and "Thank you," and to treat each other with kindness.  Well... if we did not do so, we might upset those we deal with to the point that they may become violently upset.  This is known as escalating a situation.

Me:  I want to order a ham sandwich.

    You: Yeah, right. That'll be a buck-fifty.

Me: Hey!  I wanted MUSTARD with that.

You: Well you didn't ASK for it when you ORDERED.

Me: Fine.. just GIMME it, will ya?

You (throwing packet at me): HERE!

Me: Well you DIDN'T have to THROW it at me!

    You: What's it TO ya?

Me: What the h**l IS WRONG with you, you JERK?

You: ME?  Nothing!  You're the idiot who can't remember what she wants on her sandwich!

Me: Well... FINE then... take your STUPID sandwich BACK and gimme my money back!

You: NO! Get outta here, and take your stupid mustard with you!

    Me: NO!  I'M NOT GOING!

You (shoving me towards the door): Oh YES YOU WILL!  Now GIT!

Me: HEY!  You can't PUSH ME AROUND!

You: I can if I want to!

Me (taking out a knife): JUST TRY THAT AGAIN, mister!

You (taking the gun from the register): GET OUT OF HERE NOW! <BAAAANGGG>

Okay, now... this MAY seem a bit extreme, but forms if this occur every day.  If etiquette does not exist, this would happen even MORE often than it does.  So you can see just HOW important etiquette is, to "Grease the wheels"... to "smooth" the social interactions, so that we can all live (relatively) peacefully within the society in which we dwell.

    Have a polite day.

  4. If you drink water with the wrong hand, people will think that you're stealing the salt and pepper!

  5. It shows people you were not raised by wolves.

  6. Etiquette examples show you have a deep and respectful appreciation for YOURSELF- which is VERY important.

    Secondly, for those around you.

Or, did you mean? Give examples of "proper etiquette"?
