  1. As far as I know it's just an arbitrary choice.  No reason.

  2. It gets complicated, but basically it was the end of the year in Roman times, so a good place to add a day.  This is assuming you know the reason for leap years.  If you want to look more at it, then you will find that Roman months were marked from the middle (Ides), so you were so many days before the middle for half a month and so many days after for the rest.

If you look at the original of the US constitution or a thing that shows the amended changes, you will find that inauguration originally took place on March 20th.  Of course it was easier to travel in the spring than winter, but also, the year was considered to start at the spring equinox (about 20, 21) in March.   If you look at a discussion where it is relevant, you will find years referred to in dates as stuff like February 15, 1782/83

  3. It is because the year number is divisible by four (except for years that are divisible by 100 and not by 400 in the Gregorian calendar), as I thought and researched.

  4. Darkest; coldest.  All due to orbital lag of Sun's effects on Earth, and our 23.5 degree tilt.  Caesar taking a few days from it for July didn't help either.

    That's it.
