Isn't this a form of discrimination or prejudice?

  1. the chinese are the only ones who know how to make money.

  2. I think they support any business and it doesn't matter who the owner is. The Philippines seem to really love call centers and think it's the best job in the world. You don't even need to have a high school diploma in the US to work in a call center. The real question is do they know their getting screwed in pay? As those jobs are mostly outsourcing ones.

  3. The foreign own business' first have to get into the country.  Perhaps the Chinese business' (especially large ones) are owned by the Chinese government. The Chinese Government understand how to deal with the corrupt Philippine politicians more than Western Governments. Westerners have a difficult time accepting that it is a common practice to pay bribes and this is not foreign to the Chinese.

  4. Filipinos are usually arrogant to people who aren't Asian. (especially the filipinas)

  5. Because in the Philippines most of the richest businessmen are Chinese or Chinese-Filipino.

  6. Hi ya, Joe!

It's really hard for me to understand your question.  What I don't understand is that you're obviously an American, at at least a Westerner, and you're asking Filipinos that you're being discriminated against.   Or, at least implying that Filipinos are biased towards patronizing the Chinese over American business.

And what would really compound the issue is if a Chinese participates in this page and claims Filipinos discriminate against them by patronizing American business rather than theirs.

Reminds me of this Black who was asked by a Northern gentleman why he is not fighting with the Union in the Civil War? Well, the black says "Have you ever seen a bone take sides between two quarelling dogs?"

We are definitely not the dogs here.  But 'dat 'der bone there is sure us!

  7. I dont think there is any truth to that. Filipinos would so work and support anyone as long as they are to get and earn something in it.

Not being judgemental but thats how life is.

  8. Based of what I observe, as a personal experience also, Filipino people are used of having chinese business man in the Philippines, and also the chinese is usually the one who have business that require labor, that hire lot of people and they are expose they are really making a point that, that certain business is belong to business.  Their are lot of foreigner own business in the Philippines also other than Chinese but they want to be a secret investor and usually those are the multinational business, although they hire also lot of people but they are not the one in front, they have other people as a front act to run the business.  Thats why they don't know that it belong to foreigner. Well those chines are Filipino also they are not to be consider foreigner. Some American and Australian guys in my place try to put up business, but they end up of losing their money because I think people are jealous because I hear them saying that lets not support that foreigner they have already enough money, lets not help them to be more rich.

  9. Not really. The scenario is that there are more Chinese owned business that's why they are more accessible. Another thing is that the Chinese usually have the cheapest price. It doesn't have anything to do with the race.

  10. I can only think that perhaps Filipinos are stuck with the mentality of always preferring "the tried and tested". Most Filipinos think that the Chinese are the best businessmen and they've been around the country for decades now. (My elementary textbook even mentioned how good the Chinese are in business.) Hence, most Filipino locals patronize Chinese businesses. If you're talking about government not supporting foreign businesses, I'm not sure what could be the reason why. Foreign investments are beneficial in Philippine's economy IMO providing employment to Filipinos.

  11. I don't think its based on race at all.

There are at least two factors in play here:

The Chinese have the most experience when it comes to dealing with Filipinos in the country. It goes back 100's of years before the first Westerners.  As such, over time, they have developed a well structured network of connections and "enablers" that facilitiate certain business processes.  Of course, I am referring to both legitimate as well as unethical processes.

Let's not forget that the top tiers of the Filipino business circles are ruled by families of Chinese heritage.  And just like the good ol' boy networks that predominate big American businesses, they will naturally tend to favor each other at the expense of the other non-Chinese seeking to enter their "inner circles".

From another perspective, some Filipino employees of Western-owned businesses in the Philippines are often confused or resentful of the strict rules-based, relatively discrimination free, highly ethical corporate culture of their workplaces. Admittedly, this is quite a departure for most Filipinos, often subjected to the elitist favoritism espoused by their former Spanish colonizers and the non-inclusiveness practiced by Chinese employers.

  12. Nothing like that at all, Joe.  The Philippines needs as many foreign-backed businesses as is willing to invest here that helps prop up the economy as long as the laws are no violated. There's no cogent reason why there should be discrimination.

  13. I think it's because Chinese businessmen know the weakness of Filipino consumers.  We Filipinos go for cheap prices, for sales and big discounts.  We get huge savings if we purchase their products.

Actually, it's not that we don't support any foreign-backed business; we just can't afford their services or their products.  Too exorbitant for the average Filipino.  They're only available to those who can afford and most of these products are displayed in malls or in some high-end stores which the average Filipino seldom visit.  Whereas the Chinese businessmen know where the majority of hard-earning Filipinos go to get value for their peso, be it in the "tiangge", "sari-sari" store, or stalls in not-so-attractive locations.

  14. ZTE Scandal. That is one reason why the DepEd is mandating Mandarin in schools.

  15. yea i think so.. not all though... i used to work in a call center and handled American based accounts so I'm guessing Americans run the place. There are so many call centers here in the Philippines. By the way, have you seen the news about this senator named Enrile.. condemning some foreign aids regarding about the governments decision-making? I thought he was a c**p.
