Date line 2008: several thousand russians troops capture the state of georgia in just three days.

Date line 1994: 100,00 Russian forces attacked 15,000-men Chechnya separatists. Russians said it will be just a 24-hour operation.

Two years later, Russian army pulled back, leaving 14,000 death. It was Russia who offered ceasefire first. Chechniya got de facto independence.

What is the deference?

  1. The Chechen's had Chong helping them.

  2. The Chechens have had a history of repression. In the last century Stalin had the entire population of Chechens moved to somewhere in Siberia.

Later they were allowed to return to their original country. They built up a distrust of the Russians and prepared to defend themselves against any future repression from the Russians. When it came they were prepared.

And with events like the Theater in Moscow being taken over by them, the Russians knew they were up against a real hardened bunch of fighters. They are not the most pleasant of people, but they are brave and willing to take on all odds. Compared to them the Georgians are boy scouts.

  3. Well the Georgians are fighting a bit more conservatively. They don't want to lose their nation to the Russians if they don't have to, and they know that if they fight back in a full scale war they'll lose! People don't want blood shed!

  4. CHECHENS HAVE MORE PRIDE AND HONOR THAN GEORGIANS DO.

  5. The Chechens were better armed (than the Georgians), better led, ruthless, and motivated. At the time (just a short couple years removed from the break up of the USSR), the Russian Army was in more disarray. Under the last few years of Putin's leadership they have restructured the military and are bettered trained and equipped.

  6. I bet this question makes at least one person at least slightly upset.
