Is your DVD player set up with speakers on. What is the sound level set at on each speaker? Does it have Dolby Digital output?

You are going to need to provide a lot more information to diagnose the problem. It could be media hook up or the devices themselves.

First make sure you have selected digital sound input - either coaxial or optical.   Also make sure you are in surround sound mode and not stereo mode.
