  1. The rail needs to be a certain width and height, but if it was solid, the rails would be immensely heavy and hard to move for construction and repairs. So, it's a modified I-beam.


  2. The load bearing capacity of I beam is much higher compared to any other shape and so its used in rail tracks.

  3. Most modern railways don't use a true I-beam they use a bullhead, flat bottom or some other profile. Still it has the general I-beam shape in order to provide a thick surface on top where they receive enormous wear and strain, and also to have a solid base for anchoring. There have been other profiles in the past that were not i-beam like at all like the fish belly or others. Rail tracks need to be made out of high grade steel and weigh a lot so modern designs maximize strength while conserving material.
