  1. I would say you have to cast away the fear of sinking. Learning to swim is like learning how to ride a bike, you must not have any doubts in your thought. Relax your body completely and things will work out (btw don't try to float before you know how to swim, its hard to keep the balance if you dont know how to swim yet).

  2. You cannot learn to swim from a video.  You need an instructor or a coach to teach you.  They can immediately tell you what you are doing wrong and what you are doing right.  It also seems that you have a little fear of the water.

As for laying on your back, unless you have air in your lungs, some sinking is expected.  You need to relax and not be rigid.  Unless you relax and learn to hold your breath, you will not improve.

I will say it again, you need one on one instruction from a swim instructor or coach in the water to improve.  This is not for the do-it-yourselfer.
