  1. I suppose you don't have to, but I think it is a good idea. For starters, it is a great way to get honest criticisms of your artwork. Outside of school, people will rarely tell you when it isn't good work. Also, they are able to look at your work and tell you how you can improve in a way that cannot be taught in a book. Additionally, its a great way to make connections and usually you can find internships through the school. Furthermore, there is a level of competition in the university that will keep you motivated. You will also have access to tools you would not otherwise have access to (unless you are willing to fork out thousands for equipment). Without a degree, it will be much harder for you to find a well-paying job. Even if you are planning on not working for a design firm (if you are graphic designer, etc.) you still will need to get a job on the side at some point, and even if it is at a department store, your pay will be higher/ your potential for advancement will be dependent on your education level. Therefore, I don't believe it is necessary to get a degree, but it would be extremely helpful if you can afford it. If you cannot, I would at least suggest taking an art course or two somewhere even if it is not for credit, just to meet people and for some structure to motivate you.
