1) Dhoni was overconfident of winning, and India regarded themselves as the hot favourites, but Dhoni didn't bother to analyse their limitations.

2) there was a huge lack of experience in the team, and as a result, the team was not balanced. The need for the experience and skill of Sachin, Sourav and Dravid was badly felt.

3) Ajantha Mendis was a surprise who completely left the Indian batsmen clueless, and shattered the Indian innings for his 6 wicket haul. There was no proper strategy on the part of India to tackle the mystery spinner Mendis.

4) Jaysurya's catch was  dropped by RP Singh which was very crucial and proved to be the turning point of the match, as Jaysurya eeventually led the Sri Lankan innings to a defendable total by scoring another century.

When you have so many inexperienced players in the team then the other teams know your limitations and can exploit those limitations. India got beat by both Pakistan and Sri Lanka and that's a clear indication that the opponents had done their home work and it paid off handsomely. Indian bowlers were performed like an ordinary club bowlers.
