Question:

Why Is It So Hard For Pregnant Women to Find A Job?

I'm in Canada and I'm the mother of one little boy and there's another little boy on the way. This baby was not planned but is a blessing none the less and I'm very proud of him. Now my hubby is sick and I'm left trying to find a full time job at almost 20 weeks pregnant and nobody will hire me.

I'm wondering why it's so hard to find a job while pregnant even though you have all the experience and skills needed. Even having problems with temporary positions that expire before I give birth.

Also any ideas as to what I can do to earn money without hooking or anything illegal.

  1. I work in HR but I haven't come across a pregnant applicant yet.  The reason is probably that the companies know that you will need time off and they may have to make special accommodations for your pregnancy.   In addition, you have to consider the costs of on boarding and the costs that the company will absorb once you go on maternity leave.  It's sad to say that but I'm sure it's just not cost effective to the company.

Right now, your best bet may be a temp assignment.  They may be hard to come by as well because of the state of our economy...with all the layoffs and recent college grads, it's just a competitive market.  Broaden your options and maybe try websites like www.jobfox.com where you set up a profile and they "introduce" you companies.

  2. It's because they know you won't be there for long and companies rather have someone who will be there for awhile, rather than leave after a few months.

  3. Simple. They shouldnt be working.

  4. because of the obvious...you will need time off right after starting and that defeats the whole purpose of filling a job.
