because of the war on terrorism, especially the war on iraq which is a major oil exporter. plus oil is becoming more and more scarce by the day.

so war + scarcity.

Some think *part* of the price of petrol is speculation:

Rich people buy (lots) of it, and they do not sell until the price goes up.  

With governments printing money irresponsibly, bonds, etc. are not good investments.

Because the ever expanding global economy has created so much demand for petroleum products, lead by China and India who are ramping up to create industrial infrastructure similar to whats now sitting idle in the USA.

well a reason for food going up is because the petrol that is needed to ship them has gone up
